I went into this movie with such high hopes.  I had initially seen the first film on a whim, and was really impressed with the charm and message.  In the first film you have Elle Woods, a woman, who, although exceptionally perky, turns out to be very intelligent.  There are clues to her brains early in the first film, e.g. her knowledge of fabric and price while trying on a dress for her big evening.  In this film however, her intelligence is nearly absent.  They take Elle back to the image we have of her from the VERY beginning of the first film.  She is not credible as a
working lawyer, and is dispatched from her firm shortly after the film begins.  The plot is over the top in a way that makes you wonder what the original book's author must think of this sequel.

A revelation about the nature of Elle's dog Bruiser was unnecessary and hard to explain to my ten-year-old son.  He loves the first film and actually enjoyed this one as well.  I think I would have liked it more had I not enjoyed the first film so much.  I don't believe that a real lawyer (even Elle Woods) would want to invite her dog's long lost birth mother to her wedding.

This film did have one true shining star though: Mary Lynn
Rajskub
as Renna Giuliani.  Granted, I am a bit partial to Mary Lynn, but she just nails it as always.  Her character works for Representative Rudd, played by Sally Field.  Elle joins Rudd's crew and is so different from the Washington norm that they despise her. Slowly, Renna realizes that Elle is a great gal and becomes a friend.  Renna also gets a makeover from Elle's Boston friend Paulette.  Mary Lynn looks so cute after the makeover that another assistant of Rudd's, now working for Elle, nearly can't speak.  It's a sweet scene.  If you're looking for popcorn fun with a silly plot and pretty clothes, you'll like Legally Blonde 2: Red, White, and Blonde.  If you're looking for the inspiring "girl-power" feeling that the original Legally Blonde left in your gut, you WILL be disappointed.  I saw L.B.2 for free and it was worth what I spent to see it.
