'The Downer Channel': Mary Lynn
Rajskub
Tuesday, July 31, 4 p.m. ET
Through a fast-paced mix of comedy
sketches and interviews with real people, NBC's The
Downer Channel (premiering tonight) takes a humorous,
half-hour look at the lighter side of life's everyday
hassles. "This show is a look at life — through
dark sunglasses," says the show's creator, Michael
Halpern. "It is about the frustrations of modern life
as displayed through a series of short, fast sketches and
reality pieces. It provides a collage-like view of the
world we live in." It's the perfect show to get you
out of an 'up' mood. Talk to star Mary Lynn Rajskub about
the program.

Greencastle, IN: With another "Ellen" show on the
horizon, and regular tv appearances by the likes of David Spade,
Jeanne Lachman, Gilbert Gottfried, etc., why is "The Downer
Channel" unique? These people bring me down on a regular
basis.
Mary Lynn Rajskub: Because it's time to focus on how crappy
life is, and how it's not getting any better.
dallas tx : Tell me about your backround and why your an
expert on life's downers?
Mary Lynn Rajskub: I personally have a background of many
days on end of confusion, understimulation, overstimulation, and
uncomfortableness with the world around me.
Kansas City, Mo: I love Girls Guitar Club! When are you
releasing a CD and are you still performing as GGC?
Mary Lynn Rajskub: Well, we have a Web site and a short
film, but we can't bear to go back and listen to the CD we tried
to record. We may be performing at the Bumper Shoot festival in
Seattle, which I think is around Labor Day. We perform locally in
Hollywood.
Comment from Mary Lynn Rajskub: I believe the Web site is
www.girlsguitarclub.com.
Kansas City, MO: I have the DVD version of Magnolia. I was
wondering if you were disappointed that most of your part got cut
from the film? Also, what is the part you are playing in the
newest PT Anderson film?
Mary Lynn Rajskub: Of COURSE I was disappointed -- what
kind of a question is that?? I play Adam Sandler's sister in the
new film.
baltimore, md: love the show. Hope it gets picked up this
fall... joe klein
Mary Lynn Rajskub: Thanks.
Houston, TX: Will this be a Seinfeldish show with the same
re-occuring characters?
Mary Lynn Rajskub: Sure. I think the show is kind of trying
to find itself, and that was definitely something the producers
and writers were interested in, was coming up with characters who
could return over a number of shows.
Trenton, MI: How has life changed from your beginnings at
Trenton High to Hollywood, CA.?
Mary Lynn Rajskub: It's getting better and better, and I'm
realizing the possibilities of what I can do. I have nice friends
and a wonderful life.
Rhinebeck, New York: When you do your shows do you feel
nervous doing interviews or sketches with people?
Mary Lynn Rajskub: No. I feel more nervous during live
performances and interviews. Nervous in a good way.
boston, ma: I was hoping you could tell me if Steven Wright
will appear on your program regularly. He is my absolute favorite
entertainer and I would watch anything he participates in!!
Mary Lynn Rajskub: Yes, I believe he's in all six shows
we've done, and I'm sure they'd love to have him back if we get
picked up for more shows.
Raleigh, NC: As a psychotherapist, I am concerned about
your longstanding confusion and sense of being uncomfortable with
the world around you. Have you considered a little therapy?
Mary Lynn Rajskub: Hahaha!
(Don't tell anyone, but it's mostly a comedic device. I'm one of
the most balanced people I've ever met).
St. Louis, MO: How did you meet Jon Brion.?I think he is an
amazing producer!
Mary Lynn Rajskub: He is a very amazing person, and I met
him in Largo in West Hollywood.
Comment from USATODAY.com Host:
